Marketing due diligence: can customers find the target?

Marketing due diligence tests whether customers can find and choose a target: in search results, map listings, paid ads, reviews and AI answers. Meo Advisors reads all of it from public evidence, compares the target with its peers, and turns each gap into a scored finding. The free instant audit covers this area well.

In short

  • We test search results, map listings, AI answers, paid ads and reviews, against named peers.
  • Every gap becomes a scored finding with evidence and an owner.
  • Partial readout within hours; initial marketing and CX audit in 24–72 hours.

What is marketing due diligence?

Marketing due diligence is the part of a deal review that tests how customers find and choose the target: where it shows up, how it compares with peers, what it spends to be seen and what customers say about it.

Marketing due diligence is a review of a target’s search visibility, listings, paid media, reviews and AI answers, compared with its peers in the same market, device and period.

It is one of the six areas of private equity due diligence we run outside-in, and the area the free instant audit measures best.

  1. 01Marketing & Digital VisibilityCan customers find the target in search, maps and AI answers?
  2. 02CompetitionWhich peers win the target’s customers, and how?
  3. 03CX & Call CentersWhat happens when a customer calls, texts or fills in a form?
  4. 04CybersecurityWhat can an attacker see from the internet?
  5. 05Technology & InfrastructureWhat does it run on, and where is the technical debt?
  6. 06Compliance & RiskWhere do consent, privacy or accessibility rules create exposure?

Can customers find the target in search, maps and AI answers?

We check the four places a customer looks before they call: organic search, map listings, AI answers and paid search. A target that ranks well in one channel can be invisible in another.

Three layers: how customers find the target, what it runs on, and what it exposes.
LayerWhat we check
Marketing & Digital VisibilityAI answers and search ranking; Listings and reviews; Paid media; Pricing
Technology & InfrastructureTechnical debt; Vendors and SaaS subscriptions; Tags and measurement; Page speed
CybersecurityExternal exposure review; Internet-facing endpoints; Certificates and security headers; Penetration testing on request, with authorization

When an AI summary appears, fewer people click through to a website, so whether the target is named in the answer matters as much as where it ranks.

The digital marketing audit turns these channel checks into an evidence map, account-access requests and an owned action plan.

How to perform due diligence on a company?

For marketing, we work in four steps: agree the market and peers, collect the public evidence, test it against peers, and rank every finding on one model.

  1. Scope: the deal question, the markets that matter and the peers to compare.
  2. Collect: search results on a fixed set of queries, map listings location by location, AI answers, ad history and reviews.
  3. Test: compare the target with each peer in the same market, device and period.
  4. Rank: score every finding on impact, effort, confidence and scope.

What are red flags in due diligence?

In marketing, the red flags are signs that demand is weaker, costlier or less durable than the deal book suggests.

  • The target is missing or wrong in map listings and AI answers where peers appear.
  • Paid spend carries revenue that organic search does not.
  • Tracking tags are broken, so reported conversions cannot be trusted.
  • Reviews go unanswered, or review incentives are tied to sentiment.
  • Ads and landing pages promise what the service does not deliver.

What does a marketing due diligence report include?

A ranked list of findings, each with its evidence, an owner and the fix, rolled into the marketing row of the 100-day plan.

What are the top due diligence companies?

For marketing, deal teams usually choose between a marketing agency, a data or tool vendor and a strategy firm. Each sees part of the picture.

What to ask a marketing diligence provider

  • Do you compare the target with named peers in the same market, device and period?
  • Do you cover AI answers and map listings, not only organic rank?
  • Is paid spend measured or estimated, and how?
  • Do findings come ranked, with owners, or as a list?
