Competition: which peers win the target’s customers, and how.

A competitive landscape analysis shows which peers win the customers a target wants, and how. Meo Advisors compares the target with named peers, plus directories and marketplaces, across organic search, map listings, AI answers and paid search, in the same market, device and period. Paid spend is an estimate, modeled from public ad records.

In short

  • The target against named peers, plus directories and marketplaces, in their own group.
  • Four channels: organic search, map listings, AI answers and paid search.
  • Same market, device and period for every comparison; spend is an estimate.

What does competitive landscape mean in business?

A competitive landscape is the set of companies a customer weighs against the target, and where each one wins. In a deal, it shows whether the target’s position is earned or rented.

A competitive landscape analysis compares the target with its real peers on how customers find and choose them, using the same market, device and period for each.

Competition is one of the six areas of private equity due diligence we run from public evidence.

  1. 01Marketing & Digital VisibilityCan customers find the target in search, maps and AI answers?
  2. 02CompetitionWhich peers win the target’s customers, and how?
  3. 03CX & Call CentersWhat happens when a customer calls, texts or fills in a form?
  4. 04CybersecurityWhat can an attacker see from the internet?
  5. 05Technology & InfrastructureWhat does it run on, and where is the technical debt?
  6. 06Compliance & RiskWhere do consent, privacy or accessibility rules create exposure?

How do you compare a target with its peers from public evidence?

We measure the target and each peer on the same four channels, then keep directories and marketplaces in their own group so they do not distort the peer view.

The competitor benchmarking review records peer search share, estimated spend and messaging under a shared scope, with the limits of each source beside the finding.

How do I perform a competitive analysis?

Define the market the way a customer does, pick peers by who actually wins those customers, then measure everyone on the same evidence.

Start from the searches and places customers use, not from an industry code. A peer that never appears where the target’s customers look is not a competitor for this purpose.

What are the 5 steps of a competitive analysis?

Our five steps run from scope to a ranked set of gaps.

  1. Define the market: the searches, places and services customers use.
  2. Pick the peers: who wins those customers today, plus directories and marketplaces as their own group.
  3. Collect the evidence: rank, listings, AI answer mentions and ad history for each.
  4. Compare like for like: same market, device and period.
  5. Rank the gaps: score each on impact, effort, confidence and scope.
